To men, women are full of mysteries and secrets. It’s as if we hold the keys to the wonders of nature and the universe between our thighs. We have the power to create and deliver new life (with a little bit of help from men). In this article from Scary Mommy, dad Mike Cruse finally admits what women have been saying for years: “You ladies have it rough.”
He goes on to explain how he’s glad he’s not a woman, and while his article is amusing and entertaining, it still shows how the workings of female anatomy carry stigmas even among progressive thinkers.
For example, his joke about menstrual cups was funny… until he ruined it by saying how it nearly made him gag. Why are men (and some women, for that matter) still grossed out by periods? If you’re equally squeamish at the site of a scraped knee or cut finger you get a pass, but come on.
He also goes on to say how the vagina is a “walking bacteria factory,” which is why women douche. This misinformation needs to go away. The truth is, our lady parts are virtually self cleaning (and menstruation is part of the cleaning process). Douching can actually cause infections by disrupting the system.
I’m not surprised that Mike’s article was written due to the loss of a bet. He tried his best (and it’s definitely worth a read!), but it seems we still cannot escape our country’s misogynistic tendencies.
