Alpha Mom comes to the rescue again. One mom wrote in with a very tricky situation regarding her baby’s first birthday party. She comes from a large family with divorced and unfriendly parents and a set of in-laws who don’t get along with anyone either. Her guest list before including any non-relatives is at 60 people who don’t want to be in a room together. She asks if she should hold three separate parties or skip the festivities altogether.
AM suggests that this mom put her foot down immediately. Having three separate parties would be overwhelming and would set a bad precedent for years to come. If family members can’t be together in the same room without causing problems, then they won’t be invited. Alpha Mom suggests having a small party with close friends, and if any relatives complain, suggest they get together on a separate occasion. While it is important to be forgiving to preserve the grandparent relationship, causing emotional chaos should be avoided.
