According to child psychologist Dr. Heather Wittenberg, potty training is a journey rather than a destination. With that being said, it can be discouraging when things seem to be going well and your child experiences a setback. Dr. Wittenberg recently wrote a blog post for BabyCenter about how to deal with these challenges. While parents may dread them, setbacks should be expected.
Kids can experience potty training setbacks for a variety of reasons including feeling pressured, experiencing disruptions to their schedule, or losing interest. Dr. Wittenberg recommends giving your toddler a break for a few weeks to allow their natural desire to re-emerge. When your child feels ready, focus on working on each potty training skill. Be sure to keep an eye out for more serious regression, which may indicate an issue such as a urinary tract infection.
