Having a child is expensive, beginning with often outrageous birthing costs and, for many of us, lasting all the way through college tuition. In the first few weeks alone, expenses like diapers, formula, and new baby clothes add up quickly, and that’s not even counting the hospital expenses from delivery. But did you know that in some states, it’s less expensive and better overall to have a baby than in others? This post from She Knows looked at the results of a study from WalletHub, which analyzed delivery costs, number of working midwives and OB-GYNs in each state, accessibility of pediatricians and office visit costs, as well as expenses like diapers and formula to determine which states were best and worst for delivering and raising a baby.
The top three states for having a baby, where delivery costs are significant lower than others, and childcare is both accessible and affordable were Vermont, North Dakota and Oregon. Conversely, the three worst states for having a baby turned out to be West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Mississippi. So, if you’re planning on getting pregnant anytime soon, you may want to think about moving first.
