When you’re a child, fear is a difficult concept to truly come to grasp with. And with Halloween coming, people are going to let the holiday spirit get away from them. There’s going to be some house that’s completely decked out like a horror movie, or a teenager in a bloody costume, and some kids are going to be scared. And that’s perfectly fine. Being scared is a natural thing to have happen.
Just because the monsters they’re scared of may not actually exist, doesn’t make their fear any less real. So when your child is freaking out or terrified, it’s important to not be dismissive about it. That fear is still rattling around in their heads. Having a grown up talk down to them isn’t heling anyone or anything. Talk to them about it, and make sure that they understand what their afraid of, and why they shouldn’t be worried.
