Dr. Samantha Decombel – with her doctorate in genetics and experience cofounding exercise company FitnessGenes – was ecstatic to be presenting a speech at an upcoming Euraxess scientific conference in Belgium. And even though she was seven months pregnant, the organizers had found a way to bring Dr. Decombel to Belgium via train.
But just as she was preparing her ticket, she was shocked to find an e-mail in her inbox. It read, “Our colleagues from the European Commission are not very enthusiastic to take a risk for your health making you travel to Brussels at the late stage of your pregnancy…” The e-mail promptly went on to uninvited Samantha, for the sole reason that she was pregnant.
In response, Samantha posted a copy of the e-mail to Instagram, where it has picked up steam from sympathizers with the hashtag #7monthsawesome, along with pictures of women being active at seven months pregnant. Check them out – along with the truly inspiring response from Samantha herself – right here.
