This isn’t the first time I’ve talked about the upcoming lines of Barbie dolls, but come on. The classic children’s toy has been making a concentrated effort to be better than before, expanding the choices parents can give their children. And it’s not just toy maker Mattel giving the traditional doll a modern sensibility.
Just the latest in a long line of internet superstars sharing their custom Barbie dolls, Nigerian medical student Haneefah Adam has created a custom Barbie doll named Hijarbie. She wears a modest hijab fashion style, and is the first Barbie doll I’ve ever seen that reflects a Islamic perspective. Adam says she gave the doll the appearance to reflect her own experiences as a Muslim woman, veil and all. She’s made multiple outfits for the doll, and even given her a nice little Koran.
This is the sort of thing that Mattel needs to start doing themselves. Their alternate body type push has been great, but that’s not the end of it. Barbie can appeal to any one, anywhere, and that means they should reflect anyone.
