A new study suggests that even though doctors expect most newborns to surpass their birth weight within 10 to 14 days of delivery, it’s not uncommon for babies to take longer to achieve that milestone. Most babies lose between 5 and 10 percent of their birth weight in the first few days after delivery. The latest study of almost 144,000 newborns in California between 2009 and 2013 shows about 14 percent of babies born vaginally and almost a quarter of babies delivered via C-section was still under their birth weight two weeks after delivery.
