When you’re a kid, Christmas is this magical time when everything happens with sparkles and sprinkles, and magic feels real. But as a parent, you find out that all those sparkles and sprinkles had to come from a store, and all that magic is actually a lot of work the night before.
Seriously, I was not expecting questions about when our letters would all reach the North Pole, or the nightmares that could spawn from the Elf on the Shelf. But the weirdest, to be honest? Lying about Santa. It’s not really a problem, and it’s not the first white lie I’ve told my children. But there’s just something about the level they believe, how much it really counts for them and is real for them. And I do not look forward to the day where they find out, either by happen chance or a less optimistic friend.
One of the most surprising changes in the world when you become a parent, is the world stops hiding the bad. You’re forced to read the news, you have to know what’s going on around you, because you need to know what to shield them from.
