Former US Marine (and Hawaiian mother of two) Virgina Koday would leave the service after the birth of her younger daughter. But what made her come to the conclusion to leave the Marines?
She was treated with disrespect by her superiors before they realized she was pregnant, and even more afterwards. “The platoon commander who got after me for being fat, he wouldn’t look me in the eye anymore. He wouldn’t talk to me. He would pretend I didn’t exist…” She was even expected to lose the baby weight within months of giving birth.
And despite the pressure to remain at the top of physical shape, she was resigned to a desk job. Trained as an engineer, it came as a surprise to Koday. “Because military rules prevent women from being exposed to some chemicals when they are pregnant.”Although I was considered to be a technician my entire career, I did not fix another piece of equipment…”
