A new reflex has been identified in breastfeeding moms. It’s called Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER) and happens when a mom experiences the “letting down” or release of milk that happens when she thinks of feeding her baby or anything that reminds her of nursing. Moms with D-MER experience feelings of sadness, anxiety and other negative emotions, sometimes quite severely, during the letdown. It’s different from postpartum depression. The author discusses symptoms and causes of this newly-identified reflex.
