Having your baby sleep close to you at night on a separate, infant-appropriate surface such as a crib or bassinet, can reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, by up to half, the AAP stated. It also encourages breastfeeding, which is shown to reduce SIDS risk. If you think you may fall asleep while breastfeeding your child, it is better to feed your baby on your bed and then place him in his crib or on another separate sleep surface as soon as possible, the AAP recommended.
