Reading aloud to your young children not only promotes important bonding and strengthens your relationship with your kids, it also helps them develop important language skills and primes them for a life of learning. That means greater success in school (and life) down the road, since reading and literacy skills are a huge part of our culture.
The fact is, less than 50% of young children in the United States are read to each day, and more than 15% are read to less than three times a week. Yet a time commitment of only 15 minutes a day can make a huge difference in your child’s life and help prepare them for the world ahead.
It’s tough to find extra time as a busy parent with a million different things to do each day, but designating a time to read with your child could be the most important thing you do for their development. If you don’t already read together before nap time or bed time, consider forming the habit. Your child will thank you.
