When it comes to parenting methods and newly (and frustratingly) independent toddlers, sometimes you have to decide which battles you really want to pick. If you try to win every “battle” that comes up, you’ll only end up frustrating both you and your child even more than you already are. So what about in the case of a toddler suddenly refusing to use a high chair? A reader recently wrote in to the Alpha Mom blog asking just this question, and some helpful insights were shared.
First, this isn’t a battle worth fighting if your toddler is screaming, carrying on and stiffening up every time you try to put them in the high chair. It’s probably just a “toddler thing,” and they’re exploring their independence in new ways. Having your child sit at the table with you, or using any of a variety of other alternatives, is not the end of the world. If you’re not ready to have him or her sit in a “big kid” chair, you can try a booster seat on a normal chair, or a phone booth, pillow, or other object that will raise them up to table level.
